How to resolve the error: “16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem” on your PC

Sometimes, when you try to start or install an MS-DOS-based or a 16-bit Windows-based program on your Windows XP-based computer, your computer screen flashes this error message. If one or more of the Config.nt, Autoexec.nt or Command.com files are missing or damaged on your system, this error arises on your computer.
The solution to the problem

Follow the instructions to resolve the error:

    Click ‘Start’, click ‘Run’, type ‘C:windowsrepair’, and then click ‘OK’.

    Right-click the ‘Autoexec.nt’ file, and then click ‘Copy’.

  3. 3

    Click ‘Start’, click ‘Run’, type ‘%windir%system32’, and then click ‘OK’.

  4. 4

    In the System32 folder, press ‘Ctrl’ + ‘V’ to paste the Autoexec.nt file in this folder.


When the error arises, you may be prompted to quit the program or ignore the error message, either selection makes the program quit. If you want to edit or create Command.com file, you may have to expand it from your Windows XP CD-ROM.
