How to fix the error “Restoration Incomplete. Your computer cannot be restored in Windows XP”

Reason
The problem arises when there is a security feature in place that prevents outside programs from making system changes that would change Norton’s files.

The solution to the problem

Follow the instructions to fix the error “Restoration Incomplete. Your computer cannot be restored in Windows XP”:

    Temporarily shut down Norton.

    1. Start ‘Norton’.
    2. Select ‘Options’> ‘Norton Anti-Virus’.
    3. Click ‘Miscellaneous’.
    4. Locate ‘How to protect my product’.
    5. Uncheck ‘Turn protection on for my Symantec product’.
    6. Click ‘OK’.

    Run ‘System Restore’.

    1. Click ‘Start’.
    2. Select ‘All Programs’> ‘Accessories’> ‘System Tools’> ‘System Restore’.
    3. Select ‘Restore my computer to an earlier time’.
    4. Select a restore point and then click ‘OK’.
    5. Restart the computer.

    Turn ‘Norton back’ on.

    1. Start ‘Norton’.
    2. Select ‘Options’> ‘Norton Anti-Virus’.
    3. Click ‘Miscellaneous’.
    4. Locate ‘How to protect my product’.
    5. Check ‘Turn protection on for my Symantec product’.
    6. Click ‘OK’.

Footnotes:

Norton 2009 products have a security feature that prevents outside programs from making changes to the Norton product. This security feature can prevent Windows System Restore from changing Norton files, which results in the “Restoration Incomplete” message. Temporarily turn off the Norton Product Tamper Protection before you run Windows System Restore.
