How to display negative numbers in parentheses (positive normally) in Microsoft® Access

The locale set for Microsoft Windows is a non-English locale.

The solution to the problem

Follow the instructions to display negative numbers in parentheses (positive normally) in Access:

  1. 1

    Open the desired database.

  2. 2

    Click the ‘Table’ tab.

  3. 3

    Select the desired table object.

  4. 4

    Click ‘Design’.

  5. 5

Click in the field that contains the ‘Number’ data type.

  6. 6

Click in the ‘Format’ property in the ‘Field Properties’ section.

  7. 7

    Type the following code: #,###;(#,###)

  8. 8

Select the ‘File’ menu and select ‘Close’.

  9. 9

    Click ‘Yes’ to save changes.

If the locale selected in the ‘Regional Options’ section of Microsoft Windows is set to a non-English then it is possible that the number/currency format, where negative numbers are displayed in parentheses, may be unavailable.
